Sick Little Girl

As a continuation to yesterdays post about Kaylen not feeling well, I thought you would enjoy seeing what I walked into the living room to discover after spending not even 15 minutes getting a quick dinner pulled together for the kids.

Oh yes - that is indeed a sleeping child.

At 4:45pm.

I tried to wake her. Kelton tried to wake her. There was no waking her.

I picked her up and put her in her bed and she stayed fast asleep until about 8:15pm when I heard her call to me. Kelton had been asleep for about an hour by this time and I figured she was going to want to get up from her "nap". I went in and all she wanted was for me to snuggle her and back to sleep she drifted.

Same thing around 8:30. I figured she must be hungry since she hadn't eaten dinner and lunch had been many hours before. But no - she wanted to stay asleep.

That was the last I heard of her until 2:15am. By then she had been sleeping for 9.5 hours and I figured I was in trouble. And I was for a while. She got up to go potty (thankfully! Because I have no idea when the last time had been prior to falling asleep.) and then tossed and turned for a while before finally falling back to sleep around 4am. She woke at 6:30 for her day.

She must have really needed the sleep - she is much better today. Not 100% herself but at least I've seen more energy in the past 5 hours then I saw all day yesterday.

I have to say, it was so strange - and kind of a nice change of pace - to only have one child to tend to after dinner. Kelton and I hung out together and watched some of the TV shows he loves and made guesses about what would happen next in the show. It was nice. And instead of the usual bedtime chaos, when it was time for bed he went without complaint and was fast asleep in less than 3 minutes.

Dakota studied last night so I was all alone for the rest of the evening - which isn't the norm for a Friday night. What an odd, but good, evening it was.

My Girl

Kaylen isn't feeling well. To be fair - none of us are though I think Kelton is on the other side and getting better. The rest of us have begun our descent. Ick. It's "just a cold" - a bad one with a bad cough - but just a cold.

Kaylen slept terribly last night and therefore, so did I. When she woke for good at 5:30 she looked at me and said in a very sad little croaky voice "Mommy? I don't feel so good."

Poor girl. :(

This is her at 9am:

Around 10, she rallied and put on a dress. Around 10:30, she wanted to go for a bike ride. We went.

Then she wanted to hang out in the yard. She did a little of this and that and then she asked to play in the sandbox. And here is how she set it up for herself. You have to give her points for *wanting* to play. I'd say she just didn't have the energy.

She is now cuddled into my bed watching TV. I hope she feels better soon. I hope we all do.

Sad Little Girl

After a rough night of sleep last night (for both Kaylen and Mommy) Kaylen awoke at 5:19am not feeling the least bit good. At 8:00, I was just returning to the living room with a cup of (much needed) coffee and I found this:

Oh yes - a sleeping girl in the middle of the floor. Sad. It became crystal clear that there would be no dress up games today - the ostrich feathers from her boa would not be scattered all over the house today. Instead there would be a doctor visit.

A friend offered oh so generously to take Kelton to the Indiana Jones event at our local library (something I had really wanted to take him to today and I had to admit, I was a little heartbroken that I missed out). Kelton had a fabulous time and brought back many great treasures from games galore. Meanwhile, while fun was being had by the boy, the little sick girl and I were here:

As a rule, I do not rush the kids to the doctors office for every little thing so you know this had to be something of the "uh oh. This is so not good." variety. And it's true, it's not great but it's something we will get through. Hopefully on the "sooner" side rather than the "later" side. It's going to be a long few days and nights though. Wish me luck! And if you wouldn't mind, send good thoughts that no one else develops it. *sigh*

If It Isn't One Thing....

...then it's bound to be another.

And once again I am hear saying "Don't give up on me." I have not in fact hired mover NYC
and left blogland. No indeed. Instead I am dealing with a sick little girl who can't stand to have me out of her sight for 5 seconds which, as you can imagine, leaves precious little time for anything. Oh how I hate that she is sick. It's just so sad. She is totally breaking my heart and well...to be honest, she is also making me want to run screaming to the highest mountain top. Oh my. It's intense.

It's nothing that time, love, pain relievers and more time won't settle but in the meantime, mommy is losing her grip. :) Stay tuned.

Good News/Bad News

It's never cut and dry, is it? Kid sickies are so completely random. No more throwing up from Kaylen but lots of *ahem* other end issues.

*sigh*

To be honest though, I can handle diarrhea much better than barfing. At least she is potty trained and can get herself there in time. Barfing is much more unpredictable as to where it will land.

Still. We are housebound for yet another day. I think I might be going bonkers. It would be really, really nice if the weather was decent so we could at least get out in the yard to play and breathe in some non-stagnant air.

She feels good - except for the part where she isn't. I may have Dakota stop by and pick up some liquid Imodium to have on hand. I remember the doctor said to give it to Kelton when he was three and we had some sort of nasty rotovirus going through the house (especially delightful when you have a six month old). I'd have to call and find out age/weight data for dosing but still....I think we all deserve a break and it might be just the ticket to break the cycle. It's been going on for days and days and days now.

Was It Really My Cooking?

Well......she is definitely NOT better. She fell asleep on my lap around 2pm today and woke up at 4. After being up for a bit she complained of her tummy hurting (a common complaint since this all started Friday night). A while later she said she was hungry and asked for a scrambled egg. 20 minutes after eating it, she climbed on my lap, snuggled in and........barfed all over me.

So..I guess we're onto phase 2 of her being sick. Lovely.

But on a sort of funny note - after getting everything cleaned up she said she was hungry again and I told her that I didn't want her to eat just yet because her tummy had just gotten sick after she ate the eggs. She said "Hey mom - I think it was your cooking that made me sick!"

Oh sure - every one's a critic of my cooking. *sigh*

(PS..once life returns to it's usual state, I have birthday party pictures to share. And S, if you are reading this I wanted to let you know that Martian Matter was a huge, huge hit! I have to admit that it's even fun for the mom. :) He passed up cake and ice cream so that he could assemble and play with it immediately. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!)

Updated "Favorite Reads" List and My Still Sick Girl

Alrighty then....I've updated the blogs I visit section. If you are not listed, and you want to be, let me know. I've left some out on purpose because I'm not sure if you want me to share you with my corner of the world (some of you have private/not listed under your profile blogs (like most of my MC friends) and some of you I just don't know how you feel about randomly being listed. But then - some of you I listed without asking because well...I just did. :)

Update on Kaylen is she is still not doing well. Very quiet and low energy today. She has me concerned so if she isn't better, or gets worse, I'll call and take her to the doctor tomorrow. She says she is just really tired but even people at kindergarten pick up today commented on how she was just not herself and didn't look well. The past two days, even though she has still been sick, no one said a thing. I'm surprised she isn't doing well today - I had expected this to be the day she turned the corner and started feeling better. Think good thoughts for her, will you please?

Just when you think......

...you are out of the woods with the illness missing the second child, you couldn't be more wrong.

Entering the second week of nasty poop hell. *insert sound of train whistle* All Aboard!

Actually it hit yesterday after a couple days with a "clearly not feeling well but couldn't pinpoint what exactly was going on" child. Oh the joys.

But on another totally none-related note; I need to update my favorite links on the side bar. If you would like your blog to be included. drop me a note (via email or comment - your choice) and I will happily add you. To the rest of you (like Fern!) you will be included whether you like it or not because you make me laugh while allowing me to feel less alone and a whole lot less crazy in the game of parenthood.

So? Want me to link to you? :)

My Girl

You know your 2 year old has been sick a lot in her short little life when she can sit up, grab the throw-up bowl and perfectly hurl her tummy contents into it without making a mess. When she's done, she puts the bowl down, picks up the washcloth, wipes her mouth and then sit back.

I'm just saying........

My poor baby. :(

This is one of those days that I really wish Dakota could work at home. An extra pair of hands sure would be nice.

Kaylen

YAY!!! I think we have turned the corner with Kaylen. The afternoon she started requesting, and eating, food!! I am beyond thrilled and excited. It's been a heck of a long week.

Hallelujah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are You Freakin' Kidding Me???

Kaylen still wasn't back to her self this morning and we had had a *really* rough night with her waking every hour or 90 minutes all night long crying out for something to drink so when she started telling me her throat hurt ("sting" was the word she used) I got that weird feeling in my gut. I pulled out a flashlight and a popsicle stick to see if I could see what was happening in there. Of course it was almost impossible with her tongue which would not cooperate so I placed a call to her ped's office. They could see her in an hour.

So, I kicked everything into high gear and got the kids and myself fed, dressed and out the door in 40 minutes. Go me! :)

The outcome? She has herpangina which, as I later learned by doing internet research is the mouth part of "hand, foot and mouth disease". Now, those of you who have been with me for a while might remember back to this post and this one in August of 2006 when she had a nasty, nasty case of HFM. From what I can ascertain, it's unusual to contract this more than once. Unusual, but not unheard of. *sigh*

I guess I would be moody, fragile, and crabby as all get out to but still......this is SO not fair!

The kicker here is the incubation period is 4-6 days which once again lands us at a MOMS Club event. True, it was at a public park and it could have come from anywhere but it just seems that whenever we are at MOMS Club, Kaylen picks up something to make her, and by proxy; us, miserable. Yes, it could have come from someplace else except for the fact we were at home every single day last week except for Tuesday at MOMS Club. Ever. Single. Day. We go out one time and BAM she's sick.

This sucks. And I have to say, a plastic bubble is looking a bit enticing.

Knock on Wood

The girl is better. I think. I hope. I pray. It appears to be a 36 hour bug or something like that. She only threw up the one time (which was plenty, thanks. Nasty!) but her fever raged until yesterday afternoon and then finally - sweet relief, it broke. She is still tired, senitive, crabby and out of sorts but so much better!!

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. Kelton has been sick only a very few times in his five years but it feels like Kaylen picks up anything that walks by and waves at her. Each and every time it strikes fear in my heart and I struggle to figure out how best to help. It's moments like those that I can't help but think I have no clue about being a mother, being responsible for another persons health and well-being. I can deal with tantrums. I can deal with mess. I can deal with runny noses and congestion. I just can't seem to deal very well when one of my babies is "sick" sick.

I have no idea how parents of chronically ill children do it. They are heroes to be sure.

I have more to update about but it requires photos that I have yet to upload to my computer and I just haven't gotten that far today. Hopefully soon.

Not Again!

Kaylen spiked a fever around 10pm last night and it's been raging every since. It was 103 earlier this afternoon though I'm sure it's not as hot as she has been. I've been doing my best to keep fever reducing meds on board all day. Then tonight at the dinner table she was clearly not feeling well. She refused any and all bites which I knew in my gut could only mean one thing and before we were done with our meals, it was confirmed.

The poor girl threw up everywhere.

I'm in vomit hell once again.

I forgot what this felt like - it's been four whole months (quite a record for this past autumn and winter) since she has been sick like this. It's awful and scary and yucky. I'm a worse-case scenerio girl, too, so on top of worry about everythign in the moment I am also trying to keep those fears at bay that creep in; "Maybe she has something seriously wrong with her. What if it's life threatening? Am I doing all I can do to make her better faster? There isn't much point in taking her to the clinic because on top of waiting for hours all they will (probably) say is "It's a virus. Give it 72 hours." I hate running to the doctor for every sniffle and I've made a point to not do that so I won't take her in unless she get's significantly sicker and yet that voice in my head keeps on with the "Are you sure? Are you sure she shouldn't be seen? What if.....?"

I really hate this parent of motherhood. My baby is sick and I can't can't make her better. I'm already exhausted and I know tonight will hold precious little sleep for me. I hate dealing with throw up. What if we all end up getting it? I've been feeling feverish most of today already. But mostly: My baby is sick and I can't make her better.

Feeling helpless sucks.

PS...Shawna; I am so, so sorry that we unknowingly exposed you and the boys to this at our playdate yesterday. She sure didn't give any indication that she wasn't feeling well, did she? Who would have guessed that in 12 hours she would go from a happy girl running around with the boys and acting all silly to a fevered sick little girl? I hope like crazy everyone in your family stays healthy. I'm really, really sorry. :(
