Last Tuesday, after dropping Kelton off at the camp bus, Kaylen and I met up with her almost 4 year old cousin, Parker, and his mom to go to Jetty Island. It is a man-made island and beach run by the Everett Washington Parks and Recreation and it's quite popular during the summer months. As it was, the temperatures were predicted to begin rising which means it would be even *more* popular. The first boat over is at 10AM. The boat holds 80 people each trip and runs every 30 minutes. The boat passes are put out at 9:30AM and they go fast.
We arrived at 8:30 and were the first ones there. By 8:40, another family arrived and it slowly grew from there until the passes were put out. Seriously - within 4 minutes the 10, 10:30, 11 and 11:30 boat passes were gone. That is 320 passes gone in mere moments. We were informed that they expected the island to be at capacity within a few hours time. I can see why. :)
We got on the boat and headed to the island. The kids had a great time......and at exactly 45 minutes from our arrival time, Kaylen announced that she was done and wanted to go home. To her credit - it was hot. And there was seaweed which, as it turns out, she does not so much enjoy. :)
We hadn't planned to stay long anyway given that it was supposed to be close to 100 degrees so we packed up out things and headed to the boat launch. No surprise - we were the only ones on the boat going back. The kids were thrilled though because it meant we got to ride on the top deck.
After we said goodbye, Kaylen and I headed back to my sister's house and spent the rest of the afternoon trying to keep cool. I'm not even sure we ate lunch that day - the temps peaked at 103 and being that hot tends to act like a natural appetite suppressant, you know? I think that was also the night we began our root beer float tradition for the week. Nothing like a root beer float consumed in the shade of a peach tree to help you cool down.
Stay tuned because the hottest day of the week is coming up next! :)
