Parent Teacher Conference

Yesterday, at 7:25am, I attended Kelton's Parent Teacher Conference. Dakota had planned to be there as well but alas, the "flu-like symptoms" had other ideas. Instead of getting ready to go, Dakota crawled back under the covers and so the decision was made that I would go alone.

I took care of the immediate needs of the children and left Kelton a list of things to do to get ready for school and the times they were to be done by. He did a great job and they both did a nice job of letting Dakota sleep.

Kelton has two teachers and he is in a second/third split class and they are taught leaning to the 3rd grade level.

I am happy to report that he is doing an amazing job! He excels (and is above grade level) in math and reading and is doing fine in everything else. His spelling and penmanship is a challenge but one his teacher feels he will overcome with time. The spelling, we hope, will be helped once he starts speech therapy in the next couple of weeks.

We always knew he had trouble with speech (sh, ch, th, etc) but up until now no one seemed that concerned. I asked his previous teachers and they assured me it was normal and he would outgrow it. His doctor never seemed concerned. His teachers this year are concerned and feel it is impacting his spelling. I am glad they pursued it because it was something I took note of this summer while working on his school books with him. For instance, instead of saying "math" he says "mass". If I say the word, he can spell it correctly but when he hears himself say it, he spells it "m-a-s-s". The speech therapist did his evaluation a few weeks ago and he should be able to start speech by mid-November. Everyone involved thinks he should have it corrected in short order. It's just a matter of teaching his tongue proper placement.

His teachers really enjoy having Kelton in their classes (though he does need to work on his social butterfly/"chatting up a storm" tendency. Again - so not a surprise to his moms!) and feels he is thriving and doing extremely well. He is one of the top three students in the second grade group and is doing better than some of the third graders.

His reading and comprehension is amazing (and even more still if you consider the speech issues. His teacher commented on that several times). I said that we have been reading to him every day since before he was born and they looked at each other and said "We can tell. We can also tell that he is very well loved and cared for. He is a really terrific little boy."

It's so nice to hear that your child is doing so well.....and to know that the way he is being raised shines through in such a positive light - well...it makes all the sacrifices worth it.

Absolutely worth it.

Way to go, Kelton! We are so very proud of the person you are.

That kind of news is always welcome, isn't it? Good for you, Kenton!

I am so happy to read this and glad Kelton will get to have speech therapy. It helped Jeff immensely.
