Think I can sell her work?

Our Family Picture

So now you all know who we are. :)

And here are a few more from that photo shoot:

10 Weird and Random Facts About Me

I was tagged so I get to bore you all to tears with 10 weird and random facts about myself. :)

1. I am so in tune with my kids that I know when they will wake a full minute before they do (even when I'm sleeping). It's weird - but in my head I "hear" them call for before they ever make a peep.

2. I hate the smell of meat. Hate it.

3. Even though my house is usually tidy - my cabinets are far from it. As far as I'm concerned, if you can't see it, it doesn't exist. :)

4. I really get icked out by feet. Interestingly enough though - this does not hold true for my children. I love their feet and can look at them and touch them all day long.

5. The house has to be clean before I go to bed at night. I can't stand getting up to a messy house.

6. I love photos of my kids. I take them in for photos every month and would do it more often if I could. I just LOVE having pictures of them all over the house.

7. I do not have an ability to recall what someone looks like if they aren't standing in front of me. No lie. I seriously could not tell you what D looks like or my sister or my kids unless I was looking at them or at a picture of them. This is probably where my photo obsession comes from.

8. I despise being splashed.

9. When I can't sleep I will try to remember how my elementary school was set up and which classes were where.

10. I have a titanium rod in my spine.

**Not as interesting as you had hoped, was it? :)

If you haven't yet done this on your blog and you are feeling up to it - consider yourself challenged. :)

Are You Kidding Me?

Last week a doula wanted to join a list serve through Yahoo that I am on for lesbian moms so that she could learn more about the lesbian culture to better serve her clientele. I invited her to join my Moms To Babies list since my group is all moms with infants, babies and toddlers who have experienced the birth process not all that long ago.

Tonight the doula posted to my board that someone had said that she makes them uncomfortable on the other list because she mentioned her husband and because she asked basic parenting questions (she inquired about signing with babies. For the record - her posts have been nothing but respectful.). The doula, out of respect for the group, felt it was best to unsub from the group. OH COME ON!!! Do people truly not live in the real world? What makes it ok for us as lesbians to discriminate against a straight woman? Wouldn't you think that we would be a more understanding and forgiving group than that considering what our families face each and every day?

I would completely expect that she would mention her husband and her kids. Who among us wants to have to keep our experience and family out of conversations? And as for asking "basic parenting questions" - what's the big deal? For all she knows, lesbians have some weird-ass parenting styles. She joined to LEARN. She wanted to learn - to get to know how our families look and work as a unit. What's important for us and what we value.

Seriously - if I didn't know better (which I do, of course) I would wonder about us too. Do all lesbians use cloth diapers because it's PC? Do we all hate men? Do we all strive to have girls so that we can populate the earth with "our kind"? How do 2 moms teach a boy to pee standing up? What is the ratio of gay offspring to gay parents vs straight parents? I don't know about you but I would have a ton of questions! And then there is the whole birth experience - I would be curious to know how two women are treated when they arrive as a couple for prenantal care and delivery. Oh my gosh - I would bore everyone to tears with all my questions.

I just think of myself when I want to learn about a new thing. Mormons, for example. Their culture fascinates me because I don't "get" it. I want to learn about it- about all their seemingly odd rituals. When I had a Mormon friend I had more than one super late night picking her brain - I would do it again if given half a chance.

And then there is the whole "Good heavens people - how do you function in the world? Do you hide away from the prying eyes of straight people? Do you refuse to help them learn so that they can be more accepting of our families?"

Heck - some of my best mommy friends are straight people. :) And you can believe that I pick their brains on how their relationships work too.

So really people - let's be more tolerant of others and let's help them learn about our families so we can be more widely celebrated. Sure - sometimes it's uncomfortable to talk about private things but aren't our children worth it?

Mine are.

Just For Jen - A Real Post

Ok Jen....what should I write about that would make you happy and satisfied that I am asking no more of you, than you are of me? The weather?

Ok - let's see...it's dark out there....and cold. Of course, cold for us is in the 30's. :) They say it will be foggy again tonight but that the winds should come in and clear it out for a few days.

Oh - here's something exciting, at least for me. D is gearing up for finals (no, that's not the exciting part) which means.... (drum roll please).... WINTER BREAK!!! That's right, everyone. For four, count 'em, FOUR solid weeks I will have a relief pitcher coming through the door at 5pm. WAAAAAAA-FREAKIN'-HOOOOOO!!!!!! D's last final is on my birthday which means no big birthday day for me but at least it does mean the beginning of "Life as it was" for four weeks.

That brings us around to my birthday. Yep - I am going to turn the big 35 (plus 6). I really have no idea how I got this old. I remember, as a young kid, I thought 30 was super old. Like gray haired, old lady sitting in a rocking chair old. If I only knew then what I know now. Yeah - I may be getting old but as the saying goes; I refuse to grow up! (And Shawna (probably Brenda, too) can attest to that one!) I don't know what Shawna or Brenda would say they would guess my age to be if they didn't already know but for me, mentally I don't think I'm a day over 24.

I think it's odd that the mind stops aging even though the body doesn't. Hardly seems fair.

What else? Hmmm....I went to Old Navy today and spent too much money. I bought 2 pairs of sweats (blue and green) for the prince and 2 pair of Christmas pajamas for the princess (one for this year and one for next....yeah I know but it was 2 for $20 or 1 for 12.50. I just couldn't walk away.). While we were standing in line the prince found a pair of reindeer antlers, which were supposed to be for dogs, that he fell in love with. I told him I would buy them for him if he promised to wear them ALL day long. He swore up and down that he would. Dang I'm a sucker. They were definitely NOT worth $7.50.

But wait! It gets worse. Have you seen those kiosks in the middle of the malls were they sell crap...I mean stuff? For some reason the mall people thinks it's perfectly fine to give the spots near the children's play area to the vendors selling those hover craft things. You know what I'm talking about, right? Those things that fly and come back (or don't)?

Ok - well I'm usually very good at saying no to the prince when he starts in on those things. I can usually quell his fascination by having him play with the sample one for a few minutes and then we can move along. But this vendor was pure evil. No, the kids couldn't touch it let alone try to fly it. And the he started working the prince over the wall of the play area, with "Santa will bring you one if your mom says no." and "What color do you want? The orange? The blue? Maybe the red?" He just keeps going and going and going and poor prince is getting more and more worked up. I keep interjecting with "We'll see honey" and "Santa only brings one present and you already asked him for what you want." All the while giving Junior Salesman the evil eye.

Finally, I could take his broken hearted look anymore and I bought him one. I am a sucker with the capital S. But oh the joy that stupid thing has brought today. (after, of course, I had to take it back because the remote wasn't staying in the "on" position. Problem solved with a new remote.).

I know, I know. You are all shaking your heads in collective amazement and amusement. And I'm sure more than one person is feeling superior thinking that they will *never ever ever * do something so ridiculous. And to them I say "Good for you." And I also know that even though I could have kicked myself for giving in, it worked out fine and I don't regret it.

So Jen? How'd I do? :)

The Longest Three Minutes Ever

The baby didn't want to settle down and sleep tonight....again. Last night I gave up trying at the two hour mark and without reservation handed her over to D when she walked in the door at 9:15pm.

Tonight she started to play her game of nursing, almost falling asleep, popping her eyes open, twisting around and trying to crawl off the bed (she and I co-sleep on what used to be the guest bed, now "the princess' bed"). I tell her no, pull her back and lay her back down. And off she goes again. Oh yeah - it's all fun and games til' mommy starts to lose it.

So tonight I resorted to what I had to do for a few days a while back. I pick her up, kiss her goodnight, lay her gently in her crib (yes, we actually do have one in her room - we just never use it) and walk out of the room.

OY! The screaming that takes place. It breaks my heart but what can I do? I can't let her think she has the upper hand in the sleep game. The first time I let her cry for about 90 seconds because suddenly she started screaming "MaaaaaaaaMaaaaaaaa!"

Yep. The first time she calls me Mama and it's because she thinks I am being cruel and unloving to her.

Did you hear that? It was my heart breaking into a million pieces.

So - I snatch her up without saying a word and lay her back on the bed to sleep. She goes to the brink and............starts to play all over again. So I get up and we go to the rocking chair and rock. That works for a while and I feel her getting sleepy....then POP! Up snaps her head and she starts pointing and chattering at the nightlight. We try again to settle down but then she ups the ante and starts pushing against me to get down.

So...back to the crib.

Three minutes. I listen to her scream bloody murder for three long, heart wrenching minutes. "MaaaaaaaaMaaaaaaa!!!" over and over and over again.

It's all I can do not to run in there and pick her up and hold her. But we're 75 minutes into the sleep game and I'm exhausted and the poor prince has been in the livingroom watching TV waiting for me so we can play...and I still have two loads of laundry to fold.

When the numbers click on the clock I go in and collect her sweaty little body and lay her in the bed again. She nurses and......promptly falls asleep.

She is ok - no lasting damage, I'm sure.

I wish I could say the same for me.

HO HO HO!

This was the very first pose they took...the second one the princess was screaming her head off. The photographer looked at me and said "We'll print that first one."

"Uh...yeah. That'd be good. Thanks."

Tonight's Dinner.....

....or at least Attempt Number 1. What was it, you ask? Grilled cheese.

That's what happens when attention is diverted by little ones. *sigh*

I'm feeling bitchy

Ok - there you have it. I'm feeling bitchy today. People are pissing me off right and left and I would love the opportunity to reach through the computer screen and smack some of them. I am sick to death of mothers who think they know all there is to know about everything. They have answers for everyone and everything. They know the right ways, the wrong ways to do absolutely everything. They won't hesitate in the slightest to tell you all the horrible things you are doing and just what they think if each and every one of your parenting decisions. They will stop at nothing and please, let us not forget that they are 100% correct in every single thing they do and say.

Oh Please.

I'm sick of people having this "holier than thou" approach to everything. The subject matters not - it could be potty training, bottles, pacifiers, forumla vs breastfeeding, circumcision, what time your child goes to bed, television, carseats, food choices.....the list is longer than I am tall. What gives people the right to vomit their opinions all over everyone else?

I'm a firm believer in doing whatever works for your family. I have absolutely no vested interest in what goes on in your lives. None. Nada. I have no need to agree with you or try to make you see "the errors of your ways" because I don't believe we need to agree (though I do believe we need to be respectful). I also believe that if you are truly doing your best and making decisions based on your family and your child then there is no error to point out. What works for you, works for you and that's great.

And on the flip side, what works for me, works for me. No one should be put in the position of feeling like a bad parent. I think we all doubt ourselves enough (and honestly, if you don't doubt yourself to some degree, I think you are just fooling yourself) and we don't need another person adding to our insecurity and pain. We don't need thinly veiled digs either.

There are those people out there who do have some need to feel superior to the rest of us. And honestly, I think those people are the most unstable and insecure among us. And that, my friends, makes them dangerous people to befriend.

I have no need to surround myself with people who think they know everything. The people I want in my life are people who struggle like I do, who question things, who are willing to listen and offer support without feeling the need to say "This is the right way. Do it like this or you will be sorry."

Oh - and for the record, I sincerely believe that with age, comes wisdom. It's only logical. With age comes experience, with experience comes wisdom. If A then B. If B, then C. Therefore A = C.

Vent over - at least for now. I'm pretty keyed up over some things.

Ah! The Sweet Sound of Silence

D took the kids over to her moms for dinner tonight. I was invited too but I have been decorating the house all day and wanted to finish it, clean the house and have a little child-free time so I asked if she minded if I stayed behind. She didn't.

I accomplished SO much - I have a clean and peaceful house. Just look at my kitchen shine!! Aaaaaahhhhhhh! It's so wonderful to have a sparking clean house.

At least, until they arrive home.

So I'm Wondering......

....if you build it, will they really come?

I've been tossing around the idea of opening up a parenting message board that is not Yahoo based. It would be an actual board with different topic areas that caters to the lesbian parent but is inclusive of all open and accepting moms who want to join. It would host a range of "rooms" from preconception to empty nest so that there would be something for everyone. The nice thing about this set up is that if you aren't interested in reading about something, like TTC, then you can skip that room and later start reading it if you choose.

Maybe you want to talk about the teenage years...or maybe you just want a "sneak peek". There's a place for that. What about going through IVF? What about DI? What about pregnancy? Yep - rooms for all of that all within a single location.

You can even have avatars (which are pictures attached to your bio info on every post you make. It's fun!). And there are a lot of emoticons you can use (smiley faces, etc).

Another plus is your mailbox isn't stuffed to overflowing. You would go to the board to read and post.

It would be a whole new world. But....would people come?

I currently am owner of a board on Yahoo (Moms To Babies) and it just went through its first growing pain (it's a relatively new board). A big argument with people angry on all sides. Some people left, some threatened to leave, one was removed (which I am still very conflicted about). It is waaaaaaay too much drama for me. I just want to have fun, make friends, be reassured that I'm doing ok, learn new things, think about things I've never before thought. I want a place where I can stay and grow - even after my baby isn't a baby anymore.

I belong to a few different message boards and I love them. They all provide something different and yet, they have a common theme: women who are trying their best.

So I ask the rhetorical question yet again.....if I build it, will they come?

Put On Your Big Boy Pants And Deal With It!

We seem to have a big boy living at our house. Day 4 in big boy pants and going strong. Wow. I have to say, all that advice I've been given seemed to be right on the money for my little guy - I waited him out and on Saturday, when I gave him his usual choice of "Big boy pants or diaper today?" he said "Big boy pants!"

I about fell over.

We were at my sisters house for the Thanksgiving weekend and luckily I had tossed in his undies "just in case". I grabbed those Scooby Do underoos in size 4, hoisted them on his little body and away we went.

We even had a hugely successful drive home on Sunday. A four hour drive with a "pull off quick to the nearest gas station" when a little voice said "Mom? I gotta pee."

Yesterday we took a special outing to the mall to pick out two new packages of underwear. Did he want more Scooby? More Bob the Builder or Nemo? Maybe Thomas the Tank Engine?

Nope. He wanted superheroes. Spider Man and The Incredibles.

My sister would be so proud.

The Attempts

Oh yes - these would be some of the photos we've taken in the quest for the perfect "Christmas Card Photo". I have to say, this was so much easier with only one child. :)

QUICK! Someone stop me!!

I can't believe what I'm doing. Are you ready for this? I've almost eaten an *entire* box of Aplets and Cotlets. Seventeen down....seven more to go.

What is it with me? I have no self control AT ALL when it comes to these delicious little things. And the worse part? I think I have a slight allergy to walnuts because my tongue always swells a bit when I eat my beloved treat.

To my credit though (I have to find *some* redeeming thing for myself) I rarely have access to Aplets and Cotlets and the only reason I have them is because they were on sale for a heck of a deal this weekend when I was visiting my sister. Ah yes - I bought three boxes. Three guilt laden, amazingly tasty boxes. And so far, I haven't shared a single one. :)

Being Thankful

It's been a long, frustrating and sad few days. My heart is really sad that when all is said and done, I may have lost a relationship with someone I consider a friend.

There were so many factors involved in everything and I wish I had been trusted with information before push came to shove.

But- what is, is. None of us can change what happens - we can only change where we go from here. I know it will take time but I sincerely hope that my friend and I can work our way through the tangles and come out on the other side.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I really do have a lot to be thankful for. So much that I'm not sure I can even write it all down. I'm thankful for my wonderful wife and partner whom without I would be lost. I am filled to overflowing with gratitude for my children - they are pure miracles and I am so blessed to have them in my life. Every day with them is a gift beyond measure.

I'm thankful for my friends - both old and new (and somewhere in between, too). Friends help make life livable, managable, fun. Thank you my friends (yes - ALL of you!) - you make my life wonderful. :)

Happy Thanksgiving!!
